Luxating-type elevators are made with a thinner, sharper blade than traditional elevators. This means that the instrument can be used in a circular cutting motion to separate the tooth from surrounding bone and to cut the periodontal ligament to ease extraction. Due to the thin nature of these instruments they should not be used in a prying motion like traditional elevators.
